At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

There is no work that affects Me; nor do I aspire for the fruits of action. One who understands this truth about Me also does not become entangled in the fruitive reactions of work.
Purport by His Devine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedant Swami Prabhupad
As there are constitutional laws in the material world stating that the king can do no wrong, or that the king is not subject to the state laws, similarly the Lord, although He is the creator of this material world, is not affected by the activities of the material world. He creates and remains aloof from the creation, whereas the living entities are entangled in the fruitive results of material activities because of their propensity for lording it over material resources. The proprietor of an establishment is not responsible for the right and wrong activities of the workers, but the workers themselves are responsible. The living entities are engaged in their respective activities of sense gratification, and these activities are not ordained by the Lord. For advancement of sense gratification, the living entities are engaged in the work of this world, and they aspire to heavenly happiness after death. The Lord, being full in Himself, has no attraction for so-called heavenly happiness.
This chapter number four in the Bhagavad-gita is entitled Transcendental Knowledge. Here in text fourteen Lord Sri Krishna is explaining to us, the difference between the descent of God in this world and the activities of ordinary living entity. Whatever work we perform must have reaction for every action there is an equal corresponding reaction. This is the law of nature it can not be avoided. Therefore we are bound by our activities; if we perform good work good results are guaranteed in due course of time. If we cause violence or harm to others then that same harm or violence is guaranteed in due course of time. We find due to ignorance of this material principle people engaged in so many ghastly activities thinking that they will gain something by this. And often times they do at least immediately. If you cheat someone you may get more profit than if you didn’t. If political reasons are exploitative reasons just like here in Bombay people are killing and they are looting and they are thinking that they are making some statement or they are thinking they are having getting something to gain. And immediately it may appear that they do. But in the end they have to suffer for countless births reactions for what they are doing. This is called ignorance. To do not understand the laws of nature. To do not understand the principles that are underlined this creation therefore when we act irresponsibly we japaraise 5:08 our lives in the most precarious condition possible. And we are thinking we will gain. When we lie, when we steal, the immediate effect is we have something more that we would not had if we did not engage in this activity. And people who do not understand this principle of God consciousness to them do whatever you have to do but ahead in life.
If you feel good do it. Anything goes just like that great philosopher of the ancient times Charvak Muni. He said when this body dies there is nothing left, so therefore you must get as much enjoyment out of this body as you possibly can that is the goal of life. Whatever it takes it doesn’t matter. Beg, borrow, steal it doesn’t matter but somehow or other get more prestige, get more power get more wealth and facilitate more sense enjoyment and pleasure. Doesn’t matter. But off course we understand that there is great karmik reactions there is a story in Chaitany Charitamrit about a hunter his name was Mrigari. Chaitany Mahaprabhu was explaining this story to Srila Sanatan Goswami and one day the great devotee Narad Muni he was walking through the forest. And he saw what this Mrugari hunter has done. He was so expert in utilizing his bows and arrows that he could shoot them to these innocent animals and half kill them so that for days they would just scream in agony laft in pain and ultimately they would die. So Narada Muni came to the forest first he saw a deer and that deer you know how beautiful and how innocent a young deer is. There were tears flowing from her eyes and she was just crying out in a pitiful voice that she was just laying there suffering half dead for limbs all over flapping in agony then he walked on further and he saw rabbit in the same condition. Then he saw several other innocent forest animals in the same condition and he was thinking who possibly could be so abominable to create such pain and torture to other leaving creature. But you see in this world, according to influence of three modes of material nature there are different processes of enjoyment. And believe it or not there are masses of people in this world who find great pleasure in seeing that I have the power and the authority to make other suffer helplessly at my hands. Now to all of you may think it is terrible. But people first simply to torture others because it is an egoistic idea. You see God is creator, he is maintainer and he is the destroyer. Satvaguana means to find sense pleasure in maintenance just there there is Bramha,Vishnu Mahaeshvar Bramha is in charge of creation. He is in the mode of passion. Vishnu is in charge if maintenance, He is in charge of mode of goodness. And Lord Shankar or Shiva is in charge of destruction as he is the authority of tamoguna or mode of ignorance. So ultimately these are the three features of God. Because ultimately only God can crate can maintain and do destroy. Krishna says in Bhagvad-gita
prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma kartaham iti manyate
That the bewildered spirit soul thinks himself to be the doer of his activities but actually all activities are carried out by nature.
mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram
And nature is ultimately working under Gods control we can not speak without 10:33 the help of God we can not see we can not hear we can not think we can not move we can not exist without the facilities being offered by the Supreme creator. You see what happens in the world when there is a draught. Nothing can survive. And who is providing the rains. So in one sense we are never the doer of our activities, we are simply the instruments. But we have the free will to decide who we want to be instrument for or what we want to be instrument for. We are all in the material level looking for enjoyment. And the ultimate enjoyment is to think I am the God I am the enjoyer. Because ultimately in God consciousness we are not the enjoyer we are enjoyed. We are simply and exclusively designed for the enjoyment of Krishna. This is love. In true love the lover does not want to enjoy the beloved the lover simply wants to make his or her life to be the sacrifice for the pleasure of beloved. Love is not selfish love is selfless. Lust means to take love means to give. So a devotee of the Lord does not want to enjoy but wants to be enjoyed by Krishna. And by being enjoyed by Krishna that is the ultimate pleasure to see Krishna happy. For the material platform of consciousness is I am the enjoyer and let me somehow or other according to my particular state of consciousness enjoy that means we want to take the position of God the enjoyer. Now those in the mode of goodness they want to enjoy through the process of maintenance. That means charity, philanthropy. We by giving to others by giving foods by giving clothing by giving hospitalization. This is called the mode of goodness. We are finding great pleasure in maintaining others. And this is very rare virtue that we find in this world.
Those who are in the mode of passion they want to enjoy by creating. Sex life is the power of creation given to all of us. Those who are in the mode of passion there every activity more or less is being motivated by directly or indirectly by this sex pursuance. For the pleaser for gratifying once senses in this way. We want the beautiful form of opposite sex we want to see them we want to feel them we want to procreate with them. The sex life itself is passion because it represents creation Bramha. And those who want to enjoy in the mode of ignorance they take pleasure in destruction. You see when man creates a child or when a women creates a child we think I have created this child. But only actually God creates. We are only the instruments. But we take the position and the credit that I have created, that is the mode of passion. I have the power to create I have the power to maintain all these poor people by my charitable acts that is the mode of goodness and the mode of ignorance I have the power in my hand that people are helpless and I can inflict so much torture and suffering, I can kill them if I so pleased. Han han han..(Laugh). This is enjoyment in the mode of ignorance. And there are so many people in this condition today. Did you see what I did today? I severed this person’s head. I this person to death and what could he do before me before my proves and strength he can only fall to the ground suffer and die. People take pleasure in this. And This ego that I am the destroyer. So really if you look out in this world all we see is the three modes of material nature influencing people. According to their particular type of false ego to engage in different types of exploitative activates.
So Mrigari the hunter he was in the mode of ignorance and he was finding great it was his greatest and life to just experience his power of control t make other people suffer to such an extent to such a degree. So Narad Muni was walking through and he was seeing this and he was feeling pity and sympathy for all these living creatures and he came up on Mrigari. What happened is Mrigari was about to shoot so many other animals and because of Narad Mini walking he scared those animals away he was very angree. He said what are you? who are you? Why you have come? Narad Muni said I am just walking through the forest. Can you tell me who has caused such terrible suffering and Pain to these creatures? He said me it is me I have done. I am expert. My father has trained me his father has him his father the whole desciplic succession. And I have embide it very well. Narad Muni Said if you are a hunter it is not to be good to be a hunter but if you are born of to be hunter why don’t you kill them and put them out of pain? He said no because I derive the greatest satisfaction seeing they are suffering helplessly flapping and screaming because of me. Narad Muni said do you know what the reaction for this is? He said reaction what do you mean reaction? Life is meant for pleasure whatever way. Narad Muni revealed to him by his mystic power his future. And all of these animals that he caused pain to were coming towards him to give him same degree of pain. He saw them all coming and he was just horrified he was terrified and he fell at the feet of Narad Muni and said please tell me how I can relieve myself of these sinful reactions that I have created upon myself. Narad Muni said the first thing you must do is give up performing this atrocious violent activities ever again. Break your bow Mrugari said but how can I break my bow, this is my livelihood, how will I eat? How will I survive? This is the illusion people think that they have to engage in so many atrocious activities illegal activates to survive. Narad Muni said by the grace of God everyone will survive if they just live in harmony with his will.
I guaranty you but if you do not you know what type of consequences you have to suffer. You just have to have faith. So Mrigari broke his bow. And then Narad Muni told him that in order to purify yourself not only from your previous sins but from all your inclinations to continue these abominable activities you chant the holy name of God.

You see sinful activities have different stages. Some have already born fruit 20:55 and we are suffering them from then at the present movement. Some are in seed stage they are in our hearts we are not suffering anything yet we can be very happy very prosperous even though although engaging in these activities but those seeds will sprout and eventually they will bear fruits. The chanting of the names of God destroys burns those seeds that are within us. Not only the reaction that to the sins that are now taking place upon us or but future ones. And not only that you see these seed are like weeds. But there is also seed of love. The name of God destroys the seeds of sinful desires and waters the seed of selfless unmotivated love of God. This is the greatest need in society this purification of heart. So he told him you chant the Holy names you bow down and do seva for Sri Tulsi devi. And you just depend on God and He will provide everything for you. So Mrugari the hunter said all right, I am your disciple I surrender to you and he began to chat the holy names and he began to live a pure life and people were just bringing so many grains to him. They heard that terrible terrible hunter Mrugari has become a sage a sadhu. Let us all have his darshan. Let us all bring him nice gifts of grains, vegetables and fruits. They were bringing so much ten times more than his family could eat he was telling no no just bring all we will accept we don’t want to store anything all we will accept is what we need take everything else back this was his big problem to resist to this temptation to over collect. Although it is coming by grace of God. And he was living very peaceful very beautiful life.
So one day Narad Muni wanted to come to see his disciple. Some time later he and his friend Parvat Muni they were walking towards Mrugari, and Mrugari who is now so gentle and humble when he saw Guru Maharaj coming he immediately with tears of love in his eyes began to run to greet him and to offer him a garland and as he was running on the path he saw little ants crawling and he stopped. And he began to very carefully brush the ants aside so that none of them anyway very gently so that none of them would be hurt or injured. And after pushing them all aside very respectfully then he approached Narad Mini. And he fell down to offer his obeyscenses and Parvat Muni was struck with wonder. Just see what the association of a devotee of the Lord can do the persons life. From the greatest most terrible sinner he has become so gentle that he can not even consider harming an insignificant ant. You see through sound vibration through hearing from the words of true devotees of God we can understand what the truth. Our life is revealed before our eyes, like lights like the sun all the darkness of the ignorance is dispelled. But on the basis of that truth in the presence of that light we must act positively by performing devotional service. And our devotional service must be situated on the foundation of God Consciousness which is so easily awakened by regularly chanting the Holy names of Krishna.

And Krishna here is explaining in this verse that when he comes to this world, he is beyond the modes of material nature. Whatever he does is perfect it is just out of causeless mercy. We are not God, we never were God. We can never become God. God is God. When the supreme absolute truth descend into this world he demonstrates the unlimited infinite divine power which is the beyond comprehension or imagination of any mortal being. It is not mythology. When we read the scriptures of most incredible act ivies of the Lord during the descend of God, it is not something simply that is imagination. It is not a novel fiction 27:23 , it is true. What is that Krishna can not do? And when Krishna descends into this world Krishna reveals that we are his eternal parts and parcels. We are his eternal servants and he also reveals the greatest mystery of his existence, although he is supreme all powerful independent Lord, he becomes subordinate and conquered by the humble love of even most insignificant devotee. This is the great great mystery which can not be understood unless one receives the grace of God. How although we are tiny little Jivatmas tiny little insignificant souls and he is the supreme soul the absolute truth. But any tiny little soul with humility and devotion offer service and love the absolute complete becomes subordinate becomes conquered becomes controlled by that love. That is Krishna consciousness. A eternal rivalry between the Lord and the devotee the Lord constantly wants to be subordinate to the love of the devotee and devotee constantly wants to be subordinate to the love of the Lord.
This is just opposite of the competition of this world where everyone wants to be above the other. Can you imagine if politics will like this? Campaign is frequented between Clinton saying George Boosh is so wonderful soul. He is actually much better than me. You should vote for him and George Bush will say actually Mr Clinton is very pious and he is very moral and he is wonderful. So you should vote for him, he is the best. Can you imagine if leaders would like this? Instead of all you know what he did fourteen years ago he did like this I know it. It has been revealed, he is rolling. Eerything. Isn’t it same way? Can you imagine if Ford motor company said actually the big Scheverlet is better than us. They are very nice people very pious and they build nice cars. We are not so good. Everyone simply trying to beat each other and defeat each other and conquer each other and above each other at every level of life. But in spiritual life is it just the opposite. Not only is this the condition between the Lord and his devotees but it is the condition between devotee and one another. Srila Prabhupad used to say we should address every other devotee as Prabhu and we should address ourselves as das. What does that mean? Das means servant Prabhu means master. Lord Jesus says in the Bible that he who puts oneself first comes last and he who put himself last comes first. Lord Chaitanya has said
trinad api sunicena. taror api sahishnuna.
amanina manadena. kirtaniyah sada

Entrance into the spiritual realm is only accomplished when we chant the name of God in the spirit of being humble like the grass tolerant like the tree giving all respect to everyone and expecting nothing in return. Until we awaken this consciousness we can not enter into the spiritual realm of consciousness. We must try for this. We must help one another by our example by striving to be the servant of the servant of servant. And then all the power all the glory of God lifts us from the illusion states of consciousness which is provoking so many attachments and so many anxieties so many sufferings. By the power of God we are lifted when we simply aspire to chant His names in this sweet mood of devotion

People were actually God conscious here in India the Hindus would be giving garlands to the Muslims Muslims would be giving garland to the Hindus instead of giving knives. Now they are giving knives to each other instead of garlands 33:34.Yes very nice. Your God is very good. Because your God is our God. Krishna is so wonderful he can appear in so many wonderful ways in so many wonderful names how can we love one and not the other?
