The Journey Home Book - By Radhanath Swami
![]() |
At the age of only nineteen, Radhanath Swami left his home in America seeking adventure and spiritual knowledge. After trekking across Europe for months, Radhanath Swami reached his long hoped for destination: India. After living there for many years as a sadhu or wandering monk, Radhanath Swami returned to America in order to share the sacred knowledge and wisdom he had learned from the many holy men and women he had met there. It was an extraordinary choice, given what Radhanath Swami had survived to get there: a journey filled with bizarre characters, mystical experiences, and dangerous adventures. The story is recounted in his recently published memoir The Journey Home - Autobiography of an American Swami. Reviewers have called Radhanath Swami's saga "at once an engaging yarn, a love story, and the evocation of a transcendent paradise in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.
Radhanath Swami emerged from his years of travel wanting to explain for others the beauty and rewards of a life devoted to God, and therein lay a dilemma. Radhanath Swami's many followers and friends describe him as completely selfless and consequently unwilling to take credit for his work and restless when a spotlight is focused on him. By choosing A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977), a Bengali Vaishnava Saint, as his guru (after declining offers of initiation from several tyagis or renunciants in the Himalayas), Radhanath Swami cast his fate to the wind, cut his matted locks, and entered back into the society.

This evening we will speak something on the subject of Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of subcontinent of India. The confluence of 3 oceans - IndianOcean,Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. I would like to expand on the subject of the 4th ocean we discussed last night, today there is the fourth ocean merging into the confluence. It is the unlimited fathomless ocean of the heart of compassion of His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and all of us are like little waves and aquatics swimming in that ocean and today we havecome to that holy place.
Krishna is karuna sindhu that meanshe is an ocean of compassion. That Ocean is so deep without boundaries it factually encompasses all material and spiritual worlds and all of existence. And just as the sun evaporates water from ocean to create cloud, cloud carried by the wind inland to provide life giving water for all living beings, similarly from this infinite ocean of Krishna’s compassion he sends by the breeze of His own grace his loving devotes to shower us with that water, to shade us from the burning sun of materialexistence, to quench our thirst for real meaning, real pleasure and real love.
In 1510 Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to this place, bathed in the confluence, visited different temples. Previous to that Lord Nityananda came and according to that Bhagavat Puranaprevious to that Lord Balarama came. Itis by grace that we are eligible to have the facility and associationof devotees by which we cane purify our hearts and as the heart becomes pure the eternal light of the love ofKrishna that is dormant with in heart is awakened and shines for whole world. Behind us is a rock that is visited by many hundreds and thousands of pilgrims every year. On that rock are the foot prints of goddess parvati. It is also the place where Swami Vivekananda meditated in 1892.And Many of you will be visiting the temple of Kanyakumari, which is surrounded by 4 strong walls and is right by the sea shore. For thousands of years this place has been considered as one of the holy places and by bathing there one is cleansed of one’s negative karma.
At one time long ago the asuras conquered the devas and tortured and persecuted saintly people, plundered and exploited the devas the build up their own empire to satisfy their greed and lust and their envy and their arrogance. Bhumi Devi an expansion of the femininepotency of Lord or mother earth approachedLord Vishnu to help her children. Lord Vishnu told her that she should have the devas perform a yajna to Goddess Parvati. Banasura performed great austerities and received a benediction from Brahma, that he could only be killed by an unmarried virgin girl. It is not that many unmarried virgin girls were great warriors to face the demon in battle. So Lord Vishnu waned to honour the benediction given by Lord Brahma in the similar way as he did in regard to Hiranyakasipu. The devas performed the yajna and parvati appeared in the form of a very little girl,Kanyakumari. She told the devas just be patient, let me grow up and I will satisfy all of your wishes. She came here and feeling great separation form her eternal consort, Lord Siva, she performed tapasya. Nearby is the temple called suchindra where Lord Siva at that time was residing. Very much attracted by his natural love for Kanyakumari he proposed to her for marriage, which he immediately agreed and they set the time for a particular date at midnight. Narada muni who is such a liberated personality that he has the authority to do the most unorthodox and unconventional and bewildering things ultimately for the good of everyone and for the pleasure of Krishna. He understood that if Kanyakumari marries Lord Sivathen according to the boon of Brahmashe can’t killBanasura and that’s why she came. SO he approached Kanyakumari and explained, “You know Banasura has mystic power. What if he has disguised as Lord Siva and proposed to you.” So ask something of him that only Lord Siva can do. So she said I want you to bring me coconuts with no eyes, mangos without seeds and beil leaves without veins. And with in seconds Lord Siva produced them. So on the night of the marriage Lors Siva left Sucindra and was coming towards where we are today and Narada muni had to somehow or the other stop this marriage. So he went on the pathway took the form of a rooster and he crowed.
So the rooster crowsjust before the dark of light breaks and dawn appears. So by Narada mUnis potency Lord Siva was thinking it is almost sunrise and I missed the auspicious time of midnight. So he turned back. You many ask if Lord Siva was all knowing why did he not know what time it was? Because Kanyakumari was supposed to fight with Banasura. Thus is Lord Siva’s acintya shakti he can know and not know. He doesn’t need a watch, he is Ishvara lord of the material creation.Time is working under his control, but by narada munis influence he was mixed up and he went back and Kanyakumari was waiting and waiting and after the midnight finally the sunrose and there was big feast cooked for the wedding and nothing was there, so she threw all the food and according to the legand it all became sand and seashells on the shore of the 3 oceans. From there she sat and performed tapasya in separation waiting for Lord Siva to come and she is still waiting.
Meanwhile Banasura heard about her and was infactuated by her beauty. He proposed to marry her. She told him, “I have given my hear to Shankar and I can giveit to no one else” No one has ever refused Banasura before. so angry he lifted his sword and said either you surrender to me or you die. Now please understand she was just a very innocent simple little virgin girl sitting on a rock and here is banasura, the king of all the asuras with his sword drawn giving her the order. But Kanyakumari she responded by appearing as Kali and she had her weapons too. And it was a good fight, the battle went on and on and ultimately Kanyakumari with her chakra killed Banasura. But just before banasura died he repented and became purified by her association and prayed for her benediction that,“let myself and all other people for all time to come be absolved of all their sins if they bathe here at the confluence of the three oceans.” She granted that benediction, he took bath in that ocean and died. And since that time tens and thousands of people come here to bathe in these sacred waters and for us Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu and so many other great souls have come, so it is a holy place.
The deity of Kanyakumari in one hand is holding ajapa mala as she is waiting in separation. It is said that the deity that has a very beautiful blue form wasoriginally installed by parusuram an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabupada he has taught us a very internal understanding of the temple of Kanyakumari. For vaishanvas we see that the murti is also Lakshmi Devi, born from the ocean of milk and who is now residing next to the ocean. He explains how in Kurukshaera the elder gopis, it is the place especially where the elder gopisare rememberedfor their love in seperation from Krishna. And in Kanyakumari the younger unmarried gopis are remembered. in mood of vipralambha, their love in seperation is very similar to as in Sri Jagannath Puri. Lord Sri Caiyanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna who came totaste the sweetness of love of Sri Radha and to sharethat love with the world. When he was residing in puri he manifested these feeling of love in separation the mood of the gopis of Vrindavan during the ratha yatra he was in mood of Sri Radha and the gopis bringing Krishna from kurukshetra back to sri Vrindavan dham. And in the gambhira he was practically constantly absorbed in the highest deepest ecstasies of love. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur tells us that the gopis in their pure spotless spiritual love for Shyamasundar, Gopinath they worshipped Katyayini to gain Krishna as their husband. Kanyakumari and Katyayiniare the same person. For Gaudiya Vaishnavas we meditate on this place as a place of vipralmabha seva, a place where we remember the gopis of Vrindavan and their spotless love for KRISHNA and especially how it was revealed by Lord CaitanyaMahaprabhu to the world.
In Vrindavan in the forest of Bhandiravanthere is a murti of Sridama. When Krishna was leaving Vrindavan, with Balaram on the chariot of akrura he told Sridhama that I will be back in few days…and under a banayan tree in the forest of Bhandiravan… sD waited and kept waiting and waiting and waiting in the pangs of separation from Sri Krishna….when Lord Caitanya visited Vrindavan as he entered into …Sridama ..I have come you have been waiting so long…Lord Caitanya embraced the deity of Sridama.
At Govardhan when Krishna was departing one gopa named lota baba, ..Krishna said I will be back in few days…and the tail is called punchari..and therelota baba has been waiting for 5000yrs and ..Interestingly the murti is quite a heavy set…his love in separation nourishes him. There are many …hereKanyakumari is waiting and waiting and waiting for Lord Siva to return.
On the subject of love in separation…I would like to speak a story about two of the great alwars of Sri Sampraday andal among the 12calwars was a lady who from her birth manifested a very similar love in separation from Krishna like the gopis of vraja. The story goes likle this . This isexplained in the great ..
In the line of very high and respected and pure hearted B proest was mukiunda and Padma devi they had a son Vishnu chittas also known as pedi alwar……lie little prahahlad he was spontanwous ly atraced he didi n ot require rational …he didi not sensoual observation that would estb and confir n his faith…his faith his loe was alreasd y thereAmnd the expression of loe is anturlay the desire to serve. Vchitta loved KRISHNA the son of nanda and yashoda….asas cow herd boy and playd forever with gopas and gopis. He fixed his mind on KRISHNA. When he heard tis story of …from the wrestling mathc with chanu and mushtika…KRISHNA was on his way to he wrestiling areana…and KRISHNA decide to go off that high road on to a very small alley wasy because he was searching for a simple maker of flower garland..malakara. We know the sotry of ..when he saw KRISHNA he brought him into his simple looking shop…and all the rest of his garlnd to KRISHNA’s frineds…the ultimate perfection of all of his desires was tosevean dplease Krishna. On he path of bhakti the end and the meand the receive the end are the same. When SPwas asked what do you hope ot get from chanting Hk SP said the goal of chanting Hk is to chant HK. ON the path of PDS it is not that…no need to chant the holynames…
The holyname of Krishna has ..in the sp world ….are foever chanting the holynames
HKHK…
The reward of service is simply that we hae served. VDT in CB has said the highet positin that one c ana possibly achieve …beyond liberated ..is to have the tiel eDas a servant of the lord. When thegopis snag their beautiful song..on the night of th eras lila…KRISHNA appeared before them and told them for your love and service I cant repay you even with all that I have….I cant repay you …I am unable to do. Pl be satisfied with t just that loving service in itself. That it self is the highest treasure. ..When Hanuman jumped acros s Indian ocean, delivered the message the ram to sita…and reported what he had done for ram, rc was over whelmed…on a mountain ca,led malyavanta in kishkinda kshetra. ….with such love with such courge and you have pacified the heart of sita I owe you everything …sri ram embraced hanuman with tears of gratitude…just to please Krishna. So sudama that was the ultimate reward he just wanted to please KRISHNA and hw was taking great risk..kamsa hated Krishan Kamsa practically everyday was sending asuras to Vrindavan to kill KRISHNA…surrendering his life to Krishna. ..but he didn’t care. This is love. And KRISHNA gave sudam his benediction…and after ward he would go back to GH…
Vishnu chittar and in his own humility hea wanted to b like mallakara. SO in a village sri villiputuur, he had a deity called vata patra sayi…he saw on a banayan tree leaf little gopal. And our acayas tells us …which means tasting the sweetness…KRISHNA wanted to taste what his lotus feet are like. Don’t laugh because you were all little babies…and sweeter that that is the ust of the lotus feet of those who love Krishan.
..decide dto dedicate his life nad ngrowing flowers ….meanial service he was living a very simple life digging with ta spade…plating flower, pulling weeds,,…making garland …was simply ..place it on the form of the lord and the lord would accept that..one day in madhurai therewa king whose name was vallabhadev he conwured all the province around him and he was a righteous king … in the spirit of lord ramchandra …just to see wahta ..how they were living.. He came upon one brahman…so he woke him up..I have just come form a pilgrimage…can you tell me some words of enlightenment that will make me….8 months a year a man will….half the day…coming home at night. The human form of lifeis meant from pursue SR so that we can enjoy highest liberation after we die. He was thinking there is nothing of this world that I can acheice ve….but I have not done any thing …please tell me how I can prepare my life for sp realization…acc to dharma shastras you should bring an assembly of great learned schlors …based on the authority of vedas nd who ever wins…follow what he says…
